I see writing and rhetoric as tools to understand and communicate ideas within and across professional and academic contexts. Consequently, my pedagogical philosophy prioritizes collaboration and reflection as learning outcomes in the use of such tools, and problem exploration of given concepts as the general orientation of a class. Everyone in learns best when they explore a concept or problem by collaborating with others, and reflecting on their own processes and positioning broadly. Put directly, writing pedagogy is facilitating the development, in institutional settings, of what Dell Hymes calls communicative competence, the ability to use literacies creatively and appropriately in given contexts
